HASTELLOY C-276 alloy (UNS N10276) is the first wrought nickel-chromium-molybdenum material to alleviate welding problems (by virtue of its extremely low carbon and silicon content). As a result, it is widely accepted in chemical processing and related industries and has a proven track record of reliable performance in a wide range of corrosive chemicals for more than 50 years.



 



Like other nickel alloys, it is ductile, easy to form and weld, and has excellent resistance to stress corrosion cracking (a form of degradation to which austenitic stainless steels are susceptible) in solutions containing chlorides. With its high chromium and molybdenum content, it is resistant to oxidizing and non-oxidizing acids and exhibits excellent resistance to pitting and crevice corrosion in the presence of chlorides and other halides. Additionally, it is highly resistant to sulfide stress cracking and stress corrosion cracking in sour oilfield environments.



 



HASTELLOY, C-276 alloy is available in the form of plates, sheets, strips, billets, rods, wires, tubes, pipes and coated electrodes. Typical chemical process industry (CPI) applications include reactors, heat exchangers, and columns.

Hastelloy C276 has many different industrial applications and offers customization options to meet mission-critical requirements. Some common uses for this versatile metal include but are not limited to:

Hastelloy C276 is also specified for sour gas applications (NACE MR0175) and is commonly used in flue gas desulfurization (FGD) applications in scrubbers, dampers and ducts.

 CORROSION RESISTANCE



Alloy C-276 is one of the most corrosion-resistant alloys. The nickel, chromium and molybdenum in Alloy C-276 present a powerful triple threat to nearly all forms of corrosion. C-276 has excellent resistance to reducing and oxidizing acids, including sulfuric acid, hydrochloric acid, and acetic acid. It also performs well in seawater, chloride, wet chlorine, oxidizing salts and hypochlorite. The molybdenum and tungsten content prevents various forms of localized corrosion, including pitting, crevice corrosion and chloride stress corrosion cracking. C-276 has excellent oxidation resistance at high temperatures up to 1900°F (1038°C). C-276 is not recommended for use in extreme oxidizing environments such as those presented by concentrated hot nitric acid.



 



 ELEVATED TEMPERATURE RESISTANCE



C-276 resists oxidation at temperatures up to 1900°F (1038°C).



 



 MECHANICAL PROPERTIES



In the annealed condition, C-276 has a yield strength of 41 ksi (345 MPa). However, higher strength may be achieved through the pilger process. C-276 maintains excellent toughness at cryogenic temperatures.



 



 HEAT TREATMENT



C-276 cannot be strengthened by heat treating. C-276 is typically solution annealed at 2050°F (1121°C) followed by rapid cooling.



 



 WORKABILITY



C-276 can be hot worked in the range of 1600°F - 2250°F (870°C - 1230°C). Annealing is recommended after hot working. Cold forming can be performed, however, it has a high work-hardening rate so intermediate anneals may be required.
